rated 3 out of 5 Good for what it is, but could be better

First off, this pen is sold under many, many different names on Amazon and elsewhere. Just to be clear, and for anyone who wants to research it more, this pen is actually the "MP9 Digital Pocket Video Recorder".

Considering this is a pinhole camera, I have to say the video quality is pretty decent. In well lit areas, this pen performs admirably and the video is not bad. Anyone expecting high quality video should look elsewhere and expect to pay considerably more.

The pen does have some definite downsides ... the audio is very poor, the battery life is less than two hours in my testing, and the video does not come out well at all in low light. The thing I dislike the most about the pen is the infernal timestamp that defaults to 1980. I can't seem to change it, or better yet, remove it completely. I'll update this review if I ever figure that out. On a related note, the instructions are terrible.

Another thing to consider if you are looking at the 8GB version is my pen only recorded 1.38GB on a full charge before the battery went dead. Given that, unless you are planning on storing your videos on the pen, you may want to just go with the 4GB version. That said, the pen does work well as a USB drive ... you can store any type of file on it, same as any thumb drive.

I'll be upgrading to a higher quality item soon, and I'd have to say I would not purchase this particular pen again, but at the same time I don't regret my purchase. It's good for what it is, but it has left me wanting better.

rated 1 out of 5 Buyer Beware - No warranty!
by Jeff Johnson from Austin, Texas, 2010-02-16

Beware, this product and many like it sold on Amazon do not state that there are warranties on the product. I bought mine via Amazon from a scam company called Dbroth and it came with nothing suggesting any type of warranty. After a month the yellow light on my pen stayed on and the unit would not recharge; I tried the reset button and it didn't fix the problem. After sending several emails to the company with no response I gave up. I find it ironic that Amazon would allow this type of shady business practice to take place, guess they don't mind making money off of cheap Chinese goods since they still have products from this company on their website.

rated 3 out of 5 It works, with some rough edges
by Rick C from San Francisco, CA USA, 2009-11-07

This pen-cam worked OK for me, and was delivered promptly (in contrast to two other reviewers, maybe it ships from the U.S. now). It's handy that it works as a pen, it includes the USB plug (when you unscrew the pen), and it can be activated easily by pressing the button on top.

Some negatives:

1. The documentation is terrible. It's in Japanese and English, and the latter is such poor grammar and wording that I can't understand most of it. You're supposed to be able to set the date/time (for recording files) with a systemtime.txt file, but I can't get it to work.

2. Amazon needs to post a better description. For example, it was unclear whether this is a camera and a camcorder (it's only the latter), and how long to expect the battery to last (a couple hours).

3. There's a blue light that indicates the camera is recording, on the back side of the pen. This may be visible to people, since it reflects off your shirt. This was not a problem for my purposes recording lectures, but you'd have to tape over it or something if you're doing "stealth" recording.

4. It's a bit hard to align the pen's lens with what you want to video. However, with some adjustment in my pocket I can usually get it to point in the right direction.

rated 1 out of 5 Never got it to work
by BobK from Spokane, WA USA, 2009-09-28

Neither I nor a friend who specializes in surveillance gear were able to get this camera to work. My money was wasted, perhaps others will have better luck.
